Lessons from the Professor by Shyla Colt Genre: BDSM erotic romance Length: novella (84 pgs.) TBR Reviewer: Amanda Sutton, a thirty-one-year-old nurse, agrees to meet her friend Leigh and Leigh's husband for dinner, along with Leigh's husband's co-worker. Sidney, a fifty-year-old professor, had been burned by a younger woman before, but he is still immediately attracted to Sutton. As they are drawn closer together, they have to navigate a minefield of family, ex's, and past history to find if they are able to be together.
First and foremost, this is a romance story - boy meets girl, boy gets girl, boy almost throws girl away, boy gets girl for good! The details, however, make it a great read. Sutton turns out to be a natural submissive, loving the opportunity to let go of the control she has held since losing her father as a young girl. Sidney, although dominant, has past hurts that he must get over before they can move on. The supporting cast are quite amusing - Leigh and her husband, Sutton's mother and younger sister, and Sutton's ex-fiancé Jackson all play into the story. I really liked the fact that this was played out over months - the two characters did not fall into love or even into bed immediately, and their relationship started out as dating and developed over time. It also portrayed the BDSM aspects as developing slowly which I also appreciated. Sidney took his time with Sutton since everything they did was new to her. I enjoyed the confrontation with Jackson in the cafeteria and the final scene wrapped the book up well.
Normal for Norfolk by Mitzi Szereto Genre:- Thriller/Mystery, Humor Length:- Novel Reviewer:- Kim This is the story of Thelonius T. Bear. He has sold his flat in London, ostensibly to take photos for his job as a photojournalist, but also to sample the Norfolk lifestyle, and maybe relocate there. As he begins to settle into his possibly new life, publicans are being murdered all around him. The local head of CID has him in the frame for the crimes and seems to be following him everywhere. Throw in the over-amorous landlady of the B & B Thelonius is staying at and suddenly relocating doesn't seem so attractive! Can Thelonius convince the police he is innocent?
I so wanted to enjoy this. It had all the makings of a fantastic, cozy mystery but in the end, it just didn't deliver. It had some genuine laugh-out-loud moments but was spoiled by pages and pages of long paragraphs with no breaks. It got so bad at one point, I nearly gave up, but I didn't, feeling I owed it to the author to persevere. The descriptions of the characters were good and I found myself warming to one or two of them. The actual mystery itself took so long to get going, I almost forgot what the plot was!
All in all it was a great idea that was marred by over-long paragraphs and too much 'padding'.
The Siren’s Song by Jennifer Bray-Weber Reviewer: Luta Wolf Page Count: 318 Genre: Historical Romance, Pirates Gilly McCoy has had the worst luck and it really doesn’t seem to be getting better even when she is “rescued”. Is it considered saving if it’s done by a pirate? Wouldn’t that just be jumping from one frying pan to another? Thayer Drake isn’t too sure about his luck after freeing the fool woman not once but twice! There is just something about her though that begs to be rescued.
I liked this book. I loved her pirate series and I can see that being true for this series as well but the previous book was better. There were amazing three-dimensional characters that are not only charming and interesting but imperfect as well. There was more of a vulnerability to these characters than the ones prior and that’s difference that I really enjoyed.
Again, we have over three hundred pages! Can’t even begin to explain the joys of having something to read that substantial. The plot is extensive as well with twists and adventures. I still found myself getting lost into the book and being pulled into another world, such was the details.
Beware though because there is not the steaminess as before and you will find yourself looking for it, at least I did. Because of this, I’ll admit to finding the book dragged a bit. Don’t get me wrong, I liked the slow build up to the relationship but personally it angst for longer than I could really get into. I was so invested in the characters that there were times I found myself screaming at Drake to just rip Gilly’s clothes already! Yet when we do get to the love scenes, they are hot!
I just found the balance wasn’t quite the way it was in the book before. However I’m still looking forward to reading the next book in the series because there is just no way that I couldn’t not read it, there fun, enjoyable, and remarkably well written.
A Kiss in the Wind By Jennifer Bray-Weber Reviewer: Luta Wolf Page Count: 325 Genre: Historical Romance, Pirates Sometimes a woman’s got to do what a woman’s got to do and take fate into her own hands. So that might land Marisol in the hands of a charming rouge of a pirate but time will only tell if that’s a good thing or a bad thing. At the start of the journey Blade thinks his luck is looking up but the more he is in close proximity to Marisol the more he thinks that might be an uncertainty.
There was so much that I liked about this book. For starters how about the fact that it is actually a book, it wasn‘t a story that I was just calling a book. There is well over three hundred pages, I might have actually thrown a hand pump in the air and done a little jig. It was amazingly refreshing to finally read something with substance again.
The plot flowed! I was able to completely lose myself into the story line just as I would with a big screen movie and with the all the detail, that’s what it felt like. I truly felt as though I was watching a movie play before my eyes rather than just reading something, I was lost into this other world and taken away for a bit.
A Kiss in the Wind is truly a high energy book that I had a blast reading, can’t wait to read the next in series!
Air by Ravon Silvius Novel Pirate, romance, M/M TBR Reviewer: Brutally Honest Nathan is an air mage who has had a hard life. In this world he mourns the loss of his best friend Tom, but that one true friend is not dead.
The beginning with all the explaining about this new magical world was a bit much. It was all sort of thrown at the reader, which made it a tad confusing. Still, underneath that was a very interesting and well thought idea. There were a few, very minor editing issues. Nothing drastic but I thought i’d mention it for those that are a stickler for grammar. There was a bit of an issue with flow. Some parts were so bogged down by useless chatter that it was really hard to sink completely into the book.
Despite that the story is still a solid four stars and very close to five stars! The characters were absolutely fantastic and the plot was unique as well as entertaining. The author did a great job with the action scenes. The relationship that grew between Tom and Nathan was perfection. It was slow but not dragging and because of that their attraction was very solid and sexy. Air is an imaginative, wild ride that I highly recommend!
Goldie and Her Bears by Doris O’Connor Novella Erotica, Shifters, Fantasy TBR Reviewer: Brutally Honest Goldie has a new boss, Jason, at the sex toy company. Suddenly, she gets an invitation to a steamy bdsm club and it’s from him.
There was a lack of details and the very rushed feel to the story. Then there’s Goldie who seems like one of those TSTL characters. She follows some note to a place in the middle of nowhere without her cell phone or telling anyone. She didn’t even know Jason, the boss and yet she complied with going out where she could possibly get killed and never be found. Come on! Then she lets this strange guy who could have all sorts of diseases see if she’s wet between the legs! That said, Goldie was very hard to like.
After that is just went downhill. A woman named Cat is introduced as well as fingering guy, Jacob. They all seem to converge on Goldie and take control. Did i mention, SHE DOESN”T KNOW THEM. Not a thing and suddenly they’re getting hot and heavy. Made no sense and as such, lost my interest pretty quick.
It does perk up, Cat turns out to be a ball squeezing bad ass and eventually we get to know the characters. I still didn’t like Goldie. Her initial introduction was damaging and she never redeemed herself. I’m surprise to say this, as I really like several of Doris O’Connor’s books, but this was a miss.
I might recommend it to a few friends who are really into bdsm reads.
One Hot Night by Tatum Throne Genre: contemporary romance Length: novella (56 pgs.) TBR Reviewer: Amanda Samantha is broken - an attack by a crazy ex has left her scarred, emotionally as well as physically. It has also caused her to run from her job in her brother's restaurant in Chicago to one in an executive kitchen in New York. A year after her attack, she finds a determined man wanting to get past all her barriers and teach her to trust and love again. Tatum Throne has created a very interesting character in Sam. She is somehow fragile, yet strong, determined, yet flighty, all wrapped up in one woman. Austin is a little harder to get a grip on because the novella follows Sam's thought processes, but he does come across as being strong and determined when he wants something. Together they leave the impression that they can make anything happen. The relationship happened extremely fast - I think they may have been better served by talking a little more and having sex a little less, but it made for a good read. I also liked all the secondary characters - Sam's co-workers and brother Ryan, especially. (And I would love to know more about Colin and Quinn!) This is a fast, enjoyable story.
Epsilon by PMJ Downing Novella Sci fi, erotica TBR Reviewer: Brutally Honest Mila’s space ship crashes and she stuck on a desolate planet with naught but her robot and fingers to keep her company.
Mila is a great character and she had me wondering about Harry’s attributes with her as the story progresses. Mila is getting board with her fingers until she finds a sonic screwdriver. That was hysterical and a fantastic idea. Then Mila and Harry come across an entity. Now that was interesting and freaking hot. I’ve never read a scene with an invisible entity making a woman climax. As the story continues it gets better and better. So good, that I was completely engrossed and utterly in love with Harry and Mila! I really liked the way it ended. I won’t tell you how but it really worked. Now after that you’re probably saying why not five shiny stars. What made me frown was the sex scene, there was a point where Mila was shaking with arousal and excitement. Come on, shaking? Trembling? Her hands could barely hit a button that made Harry, the robot’s penis come out. That was too farfetched and ridiculous. It almost makes me wonder if this is a male writer but this could also be the author’s first book. Either way, it was an issue.
I still highly recommend this novella. Epsilion was a hot, unique read that gave me a completely new perspective on robots.
+Giveaway: 1 ebook The Last Cowboy by James Cox Novella m/m, erotica, post-apocalyptic TBR reviewer: Brutally Honest This is all about a virus that whips out most of the population. Ben is a lonely cowboy that really touched my heart. He’s just looking for someone to spend the rest of his life on earth with. I really felt for him. Cody is the stranger from the city that is starving and needs rescuing. Ben is happy to oblige until a secret comes out, one that could kill them both.
I really, really enjoyed this story. It wasn’t perfect as it could have used more details about this virus and a little more length but that was made up for by the characters personality. The plot was well done. It was fast paced but still had slow moments for the two hot guys to fall for each other. The romance was scorching hot and if you like some serious heat between sexy men, I think you’re going to love this. The Last Cowboy was a quick, hard-hitting read that I will definitely recommend. I can't wait to read the rest of the books in this series!
Long Live the King by Lee Ann Sontheimer Murphy Novella Contemporary, Romance TBR Reviewer: Brutally Honest The beginning was awkward like the author was trying to fit everything in there at once. We met Silver and Lacie, both escorts in Las Vegas, Nevada. There's a brief choppy scene where we learn about her background and love of Elvis. With the lack of details and lots of rushing in terms of scenes, I couldn’t really sink into the story as much as I wanted to. This also needed more editing.
Now for the characters, Lacie was essentially a hooker, sorry, escort. She slept with several men a day for money and this gave her a very cardboard personality. There was no passion in anything she did. Maybe it’s because of the editing issues she came off so bad. Like she didn’t care and just wanted money.
As the story progressed, I had a real hard time getting through it. The flow was slow plus the unlikable characters and the editing needed, this was only sixty pages but I took about three breaks. If I didn’t have to review this for TBR, I would have stoppd.
Overall, I liked the idea behind the story but I think this needed more work to be an enjoyable read.
