This is the second book of the “Of War” series and it picks up where “The Heart of War” left off. Ares and Alena have moved to Olympus and are eagerly awaiting their first child. The God of Gods, Zeus, is not happy with Alena being on Olympus and being with Ares. So with the help of Apollo he schemes and plans to break the lovers apart and get rid of Alena and her child. Ares and Alena´s life on Olympus is further complicated when it turns out that their son Raven, is a powerful, extremely intelligent and power hungry child. Now Ares has to do
what he can to keep his family together and watch as Alena is struggling with he rdeveloping powers, visions and a monster of a son.
This fel tlike a pretty typical second book in a series, with a lot of building events and plots, but no resolutions. I am very sure though that the author will tie everything up nicely and leave no loose ends in the next book in the series. This book was a very different read compared to the previous one. The people are much the same and the Gods of Olympus keep scheming against each other, however there was almost none of the physical violence that we saw so much of in the first book. Instead it is all about mind games and messing with mostly Alena´s and Raven´s heads. There was also a lot less sex in this book and although we were given a tender and intimate moment with Ares and Alena, there was very little of the playfulness and fun moments with the two.
The characters are still very well made, with a lot of depth and personality, and Raven is outright scary. I have no idea if I want him to be able to walk down a different path and redeem himself or if he is just meant to be as violent and scheming as his grandfather Zeus. This story was less action-filled than the last one, which actually was pretty good as it focused more on the main story and less on other events on the side.
If one enjoyed “The Heart of War”, then one should definitely continue on with this second installment. The reader just has to be prepared to be left hanging until the third part comes out.

Ares, God of War, has been exiled from Mount Olympus and is now living on his private island, entertained by his harem of mortal women. One day a young bruised and battered woman wearing a golden chastity belt is washed up on Ares´ shores and she has no memory of how she got there. The woman turns out to be a Fey named Alena and she has been on the run from her intended husband, the Celtic God of the Forest and Death, Cernunnos, for almost 200 years. Ares is captivated by Alena and he is determined to win her love and put together the puzzle pieces that make up Alena´s past. Soon, the passion and love between them is burning strong, but there are many who try to put obstacles in their path to happiness. They have to fight both mortals and gods to get each other to find their happily ever after.
This is a good book with a great main story line, two very likeable main characters you really want to see together and a nice mix of mythologies. The author has a very engaging writing style, keeping the reader on their toes the whole time. She describes violence as well as
sweet romance with equal intensity. This book contains quite a lot of graphic violence, including sexual violence/abuse, and I believe that anyone who wants to read this book should be well aware of this.
Ares is gorgeous and he knows it. He is also very selfish, moody and sexually insatiable. Having been exiled from Olympus he now lives on an island where he keeps the company of
a few guards and a harem of women. Ares isn´t exactly happy, but his existence is good enough, at least until Alena washes ashore on his island and he realizes how much he has been missing.
Alena is a very independent and cocky Fey woman, with a lot of empathy. Not to forget she is also a great fighter. Even though Ares is still moody and enjoys the violence war brings, Alena manages to coax out his softer, more loving and passionate side. This transformation takes Ares from a mean and selfish character to a likeable badass with a big heart. The two main characters are very well developed, rich in emotion, personality and one really feels involved in every step of their growing relationship.
There were parts of this book that were so good I could hardly put the book down, but there were also other parts that I just wanted to skim through and be over with. I think there were two main reasons for the tougher parts. One was the sexual abuse, which occurred not once, not twice, but at least four times in different settings. A bit too much for my own personal
taste. The second thing was the sometimes very long subplots. Sure, the subplots were all woven in to the main story very nicely in the end and nothing was left hanging loose, but at the point of reading those particular parts I didn´t really understand why they were included. They tended to feel unnecessary and longwinded.
I highly commend the author for managing a descriptive writing style. Instead one really feels engaged in the story and very much in the middle of all the action. I recommend this story to those who like a well written story with equal parts romance, hot sex, angst, violence and intrigue.

Review
I admit, what first grabbed my attention was the cover. It is smoking hot. The blurb further intrigued me and I picked Christmas Eve on Olympus to review.
The beginning was such a contradiction to the ending, well the second half. It was rushed with lots of telling. I felt like I was reading an outline for a book rather than a story. There were no surrounding details, I had no idea what the ‘fortress’ looked like. There were scenes with head hopping and words missing from sentences.
Despite all that I read on. As Ares, God of War, and Alena, his wife, put their child to bed in preparation for Santa’s arrival everything changes. The pace slows (A good thing), the dialogue becomes crisp and I can really see the love between Ares and Alena. There’s no more telling, head hopping or rushing. The second half of this story was really well written. I love the candy cane sucking line, ha! I will also be purchasing some peppermint oil.
Christmas Eve on Olympus was a cute story and shows a lot of promise for the authors other
publications. This isn’t some mind blowing story that will change your life but it will get you hot and smiling for the season. I will be checking out Ms. Darling’s other books based on this read. I for one have them on my to-read list and look forward to delving deeper into her worlds.
