+Giveaway: 1 ebook Fantasy - novel TBR Reviewer: Daniella ReviewThis is the second book in The Embers series and when I picked up the book I had not read the first one. There was enough background information to understand what had happened previously. This book can be read as a stand alone, but I think one gets more out of this book if one starts with the first book. If not for the world building, then for a greater understanding of the relationships between the different characters. Kiera, a human fire mage, has been transported from our modern day Alaska to an alternate version of the state. In this parallel universe there are elemental mages, who rule the realm and shapeshifters, who are often enslaved by the most powerful mages. When this book begins Kiera and her shifter husband Laszlo are the newly appointed governors of Fairbanks. They previously overthrew the old rulers and set all slaves free. Governor Vrishka, in the neighboring city, see them and their mission to free all slaves as a threat and plans to attack Fairbanks and restore the old order in the city. Kiera and Laszlo have to fight to keep their city, their people safe and fight off both the threat of the other governor as well as the traitors they have in their own city. The world building in the story is very interesting. It has elemental mages, wielding magic by controlling one or more elements and shape shifters. The politics of the world and the balance between the different people is very thought through (and very cruel and unfair). The author has set clear rules for how the elemental magic works, which is very good. I did have to consult the glossary though to understand how it all worked. It is possible that I would have understood it better if I had read the first book. The story was a little slow at times, with a lot of hanging around and talking. The last third was excellent though with much action, battle scenes and a daring rescue mission, where one finally gets to see the powerful mage that Kiera is. I like Kiera as a person, although sometimes she is a little naïve and jumps to conclusions too fast. Her heart is definitely in the right place and her magical powers are very interesting. However, she as a ruler makes no sense to me. She just does not seem right for the task and it seems strange that the city functions as well as it does. Blowing Embers is a well written fantasy in a compelling alternate universe. ExcerptSome say Death glides in on angel-black wings while others say that it kisses away one’s last breath like a gentle grandmother. Kiera’s reaper, however, hurtled down the frosted field on four razor-clawed feet. Narrowed eyes sharpened the terrifying vision of more than two thousand pounds of raging bear, leaping as he ran, and larger with every heartbeat. So much larger. Again she set her feet and leaned forward, hands up. Her throat squeezed when she swallowed. “Hold it fast,” Lady Agni yelled from the sideline, spurring a snake of annoyance to wind through Kiera’s chest. Adrenalin shook her hands, numbed her lips. Further crisped the details of the horror coming for her: ruddy fur, erecton rippling shoulders. The needle white of bared teeth. The grunt of forced breath each time those massive front feet crushed circles into the snow. And then he was there. What must have been fifty thousand pounds of force slammed into her shield, shoved her back three yards and to her knees. The shield held, and fire sung in her veins. “Ahh!” she screamed joyously. Defiantly. Her feet pushed her back up as she leaned forward and fed more air into the space between them, forcing him back. Undaunted, the bear continued his drive.Twisting like a cornered wolverine, he clawed furiously, used knife blade teeth to tear the unseen barrier between them, but as her air continued to flow, the space grew larger, wider, and she knew he was losing. All at once he drew back, away from the shield’s edge, and in that split second Kiera wondered if hewould accede defeat. A smile began as he threw himself like a supplicant to the ground at her feet, but instead of begging her mercy, open jaws roared his furor. Giant claws blurred, ripped bloody gashes into the black earth dividing them. Too late Kiera understood, and before she could send a sheet of air deep into the winter’s dead soil between them, theknife’s-blade claws broke through to her side of the shield. Without pausing, he leapt up and back, lifted the shield, and Kiera, off the ground. A vision of trees, mountains, fog, and sky flashed across her eyes, and her breath, and the elemental air that she held, oomphed out when her back slammed into the snow. An enormous naked man landed on top of her, a rare grin lighting his face. For a moment, she stared into deep brown eyes set in a god’s rugged mien, skin as dark and warm as umber, as the wind blew a tendril of black hair across his jaw. “Damn it,” she wheezed. Instead of answering, he kissed her mouth. Purchase Here4 Comments Review: The Katar Legacy by Tobin Loshento 04/23/2012
Fantasy - novel TBR Reviewer: Kim ReviewThis is the story of Tsom, a 19 year old sneak thief. He has the misfortune of stealing one of the Rings of Power from a race called the Katar. He runs away to the Resistance to hide and soon finds himself embroiled in a plot to overthrow the Katar amongst a Civil War with another race called the Tarth. Along the way he meets people that can help him learn more about himself and powers he never knew he had. This was surprisingly good. The beginning seemed a little confusing at first but once I had sorted out who was who and what went where I was well away! The descriptions of the different worlds and races were rich and vivid. At times I felt like I was there riding along with Tsom and Shara. Tsom was a believable lead, learning about his new life and powers. His heartache at the loss of his friends was heartbreaking. The war scenes were detailed but were not overly complicated or lengthy. I enjoyed the pace of the book once it started to pick up at around a quarter of the way through. The ending was poignant and satisfying. The Katar Legacy is a great fantasy read! Purchase HereReview: The Big Man of Barlow by Brad Carter 04/06/2012
Fantasy - novel TBR Reviewer: Kim ReviewBarlow, Arkansas has a secret, and that secret is the Sasquatch...known as 'The Big Man'. This is the story of how Barlow became overrun with Hollywood types trying to make a film about said Sasquatch. It is also the story of Hank Harmon, who has just lost his partner Gus, who is something of an authority on Sasquatch. With a drunk baptist, and the hollwood circus, can Hank save the Sasquatch from being discovered? This was an interesting story, funny in places and sad in others. It went along at a steady pace but at no point did it blow my socks off. The story idea was different and I loved the idea of a man trying to save a legend and keep it safe because of a loyalty to his late partner. It just never really got to 'wow' status for me. Don't get me wrong, it was a nice story and the characters were well-rounded and believable, but it was just that - a nice story. I will remember it more for the Big Man than anything else. I would hesitate to recommend this as it just didn't light my fire. Fortunately I stuck the story out, and the action, passion and adventure kicked in. With twists, turns and a fresh take on shape shifters this tale left me impressed and eager to read more. Mina is a woman who’s stuck at a turning point in her life, and unsure of where to go next. After losing her Mother she receives a mysterious letter that leads her to Germany. The Father she’s always thought to be dead is alive, and with nothing left to loose she sets off to find him, and hopefullya part of herself in the process. Once she arrives there she meets the sexy enigma known as Mathias. Sent by her Father the tempting French born man has her thinking wicked thoughts the first night they met. Luckily for her , the reality of their coming together is even more phenomenal. I can only describe their passionate encounters as Smex. The hot nasty, down and dirty melding of bodies we all need every now and then. Mathias is his king’s best warrior sent to protect the daughter no one knew he had, until now. The attraction he feels for Mina is instant, and resistance is futile when instincts take over and he marks her. The discovery of her true heritage brings up painful betrayals and tests them both in ways they never imagined. This is a wonderful read that will keep you turning pages as fast as you can read them once you get over the slow start. I recommend this books, especially if you love shifters. ExcerptMina tried to turn again to go to her room. His fingers tightened slightly and he took the first step to loom over her. He inhaled slowly as if he was getting ready to deliver an unwanted speech. Mina narrowed her eyes and raised a hand to stop him from speaking. Instead of delving into the reasons he would not be leaving her side, he reached up with his free hand and grasped Mina’s raised palm gently. He released her arm and pressed her hand between both of his as if warming it. His green eyes darkened as Mina’s mouth fell open in shock. She stopped breathing, almost as if in expectation of what he was going to do. Very slowly and deliberately, he raised her hand to his mouth. The blood in her veins stopped flowing as her knuckles came into contact with his warm lips. His mouth remained on her hand for what seemed like hours. Her fingers instinctively curled inward and she fought the urge not to place her other hand in his hair and hold on tight. Jesus, what this man could probably do with that mouth. It might have been a while since Mina had had sex, but the flutter in her stomach reminded her she was probably due for some real quick. Slowly removing his mouth from her hand, he took a slight nip at her skin with his teeth. Mina’s nipples immediately tightened against her shirt at the sensation. Mathias lifted his thick lashes and she met his heated gaze. His eyes were warm and inviting. He didn’t let her hand go but simply started brushing the inside of her palm with the pad of his thumb. Mina was immediately aware of the wetness pooling between her legs at the mere idea of what could happen next. She felt chilled but about to melt at the same time. No words came to her. Only a feeling of guilt mixed with the tantalizing thought of letting him touch her more. She was way too turned-on to utter a word. With her mouth still open, she just stood there and stared. His eyes were almost hypnotic. Her mind was a complete blank. All she knew was she did not want this man to let go of her hand. She imagined he continued up the steps and led her behind him, like a lamb to slaughter. Once reaching her room, he would push her up against the door and crush his mouth to hers, sending her into oblivion. He’d lace his hands into her hair and gently tug at the curls to force her closer. She’d arch against him to get the feel of his body against hers. Warm, hard and ready. His hands would move slowly down her back to grip her ass, lifting her against him. Wrapping her legs around his hips, she’d feel the hardness of his need for her and grind herself against it. She’d moan into his mouth that she wanted him desperately. He’d magically open the door, and within seconds, he’d be on top of her, burying her in the soft down comforter on top of the bed in her room. Gently moving his hands up her sides and underneath her sweater, he’d cup her breasts and move his thumbs expertly over her already hard nipples. Throwing back her head in ecstasy, she’d beg him to take her... Wake up Mina! She snapped out of her sexual trance to realize she had been grasping his hand hard enough to dig her short nails into his skin. He slowly straightened his stance. Once again, she looked up into his gorgeous face. Was he smiling? Her hand still molded in his, Mina remained frozen in place. “Good night then, Mina. Sleep well.” Mina’s hand was slowly lowered to her side and his warm palms slipped away, leaving her wondering what the hell had just happened. Very casually, Mathias turned and walked out of the hotel, closing the door firmly behind him. Mina remained standing on the third step with her mouth open and her gaze glued to the closed front door of the hotel. “Holy shit.” Purchase Here+Giveaway Fantasy, Romance - novel TBR Reviewer: Daniella ReviewThis story begins with King Oryan being attacked by his wizard brother Haerold. The Queen is killed during the attack, but Oryan and his son Gawain manage to get away with the aid of the Fairy Queen Kyri and her people. With the King is his closest man and friend, The High Marshall, Morgan. In order to keep Gawain safe, he is sent away with a guardian. Kyri and Morgan work together to raise rebel forces and help Oryan get his crown back. This is an epic fantasy romance, where we follow Kyri and Morgan in their battles against Haerold and his men. They fall in love as they are working together and fight for their love in a time when duty calls and time for a relationship is hard to find. I want to start by saying that I really enjoyed the story and I did read it in pretty much one sitting. Kyri and Morgan are great together, with just the right amount of love and lust. Was it the best fantasy I ever read? No. Was it the worst I ever read? Far from. Was it a good romance? Oh yeah! The story is based on a plot that has been done many times in the genre, but it had certain parts and characters that made it original enough. Even though the focus is on Morgan and Kyri, there are a lot of other characters, both human and fairy that bring a lot to the story. You can really feel the camaraderie between the King and his men. The Fairy is a fun and cheeky people with a mischievous side. The first half of the story was a little slow with a lot of repetition. Attack by bad guys, Morgan is hurt and saved by Kyri. Attack by bad guys, Kyri is hurt and saved by Morgan. The second half of the story is where it picks up and there is more action, both in the war and in the love story. As a romance (in a fantasy setting) this story had a lot more going for it than as a fantasy (with romance). I liked Kyri and Morgan together and how deep their love for each other went. They had ups and downs, had to make some hard decisions, but came out strong in the end. For the fantasy part I would have liked a little more. The fairy and their lore were pretty well developed, but the wizardry and the place for magic in the world did not feel developed at all. Also I lacked any insight in Haerold´s thinking and person. I like when the enemy is as well developed as the main characters. Haerold was mostly the “power hungry, evil brother who beats down on all his people”-stereotype, while on the good side everyone was noble with a heart of gold (luckily, there were a few exceptions). I would also have loved to follow Gawain's journey, learning about his new life and abilities as he comes back from exile. I would highly recommend this to anyone who wants to read a light epic fantasy with a good romance baked into it. ExcerptAhead of them they heard the sounds of fighting. Oryan swore. “Whatever happens, they must not take Gawain.” All of them knew it. If Oryan’s line was to survive the boy was their only hope. All of them knew of Haerold, the rumors and the truths—which were far darker. Morgan and his men sprinted ahead in a great flying wedge, Morgan at the lead as the last of the King’s men defending the back servant’s stair fell before the surge of invaders. In a clash of steel and flesh they came together, Morgan’s Marshals and the intruders, the intruders caught unprepared for the new assault. No one stopped for even a second nor even paused. Liliane looked the boy Gawain square in the eyes. “On my back,” she said, fiercely, “and you stay there. You don’t let go. You hear me?” The boy nodded and she swung him around behind her, freeing her hands, freeing her swords. They would have to kill her to get to him. Swords flashed as Morgan hacked a way through and his people drove into the mass of fighters, scattering them, cutting through, cutting past. The dark clad invaders fell but they took Armand with them, an ill-timed thrust getting past his guard and armor both. An invader leaped at Oryan but the King, no slouch with a sword himself, cut the man down on the fly with one quick swipe of his longsword as those of Morgan’s men behind him joined the battle, too. Then they were past. Not a single invader survived that assault. Distantly behind them they could hear the sounds of running men coming toward them, boots clattered. There was the crash of doors being kicked in, shouts of frustration and fury. Searching. Not theirs then. Pain pierced Oryan’s heart. Gwen? If they had come so far…then she was fallen… Gwenifer! Grief nearly swallowed him. He knew then his beloved Queen was gone. Forever. They raced up the stairs of the circular tower, desperate to reach the top before Haerold’s men reached them, before his magic found them. Below on the stair came the sound of battle, the clang and clamor of steel on steel, the grunt and groan of men in combat as Morgan’s men held the door. They hammered the invaders back and back, slammed the door shut and barred it quickly. It wouldn’t hold long. They burst out into darkness as the wind whipped at their hair, their clothes, as it battered at them. Far beneath them in the courtyard below, the castle Guard fought a hopeless battle. Steel rang on steel, metal crashed on wood… Light flashed luridly, greenish and unnatural… magic… Men died in the roar of the flames…Shouts, screams and desperate cries filled the air clearly even so high above. Oryan looked up to the black night sky to find it filled with gossamer wings… Purchase HereCONTEST: Valerie Douglas is giving away an ecopy to one lucky winner. Comment below to enter. One day a young bruised and battered woman wearing a golden chastity belt is washed up on Ares´ shores and she has no memory of how she got there. The woman turns out to be a Fey named Alena and she has been on the run from her intended husband, the Celtic God of the Forest and Death, Cernunnos, for almost 200 years. Ares is captivated by Alena and he is determined to win her love and put together the puzzle pieces that make up Alena´s past. Soon, the passion and love between them is burning strong, but there are many who try to put obstacles in their path to happiness. They have to fight both mortals and gods to get each other to find their happily ever after. This is a good book with a great main story line, two very likeable main characters you really want to see together and a nice mix of mythologies. The author has a very engaging writing style, keeping the reader on their toes the whole time. She describes violence as well as sweet romance with equal intensity. This book contains quite a lot of graphic violence, including sexual violence/abuse, and I believe that anyone who wants to read this book should be well aware of this. Ares is gorgeous and he knows it. He is also very selfish, moody and sexually insatiable. Having been exiled from Olympus he now lives on an island where he keeps the company of a few guards and a harem of women. Ares isn´t exactly happy, but his existence is good enough, at least until Alena washes ashore on his island and he realizes how much he has been missing. Alena is a very independent and cocky Fey woman, with a lot of empathy. Not to forget she is also a great fighter. Even though Ares is still moody and enjoys the violence war brings, Alena manages to coax out his softer, more loving and passionate side. This transformation takes Ares from a mean and selfish character to a likeable badass with a big heart. The two main characters are very well developed, rich in emotion, personality and one really feels involved in every step of their growing relationship. There were parts of this book that were so good I could hardly put the book down, but there were also other parts that I just wanted to skim through and be over with. I think there were two main reasons for the tougher parts. One was the sexual abuse, which occurred not once, not twice, but at least four times in different settings. A bit too much for my own personal taste. The second thing was the sometimes very long subplots. Sure, the subplots were all woven in to the main story very nicely in the end and nothing was left hanging loose, but at the point of reading those particular parts I didn´t really understand why they were included. They tended to feel unnecessary and longwinded. I highly commend the author for managing a descriptive writing style. Instead one really feels engaged in the story and very much in the middle of all the action. I recommend this story to those who like a well written story with equal parts romance, hot sex, angst, violence and intrigue. Imagine having someone so devoted to you and you don't even know it. What if that person, that perfect one was right under your nose? What if that person was not only the hero of your heart, but a savior to many? Dorothy Gale found herself growing older and was stuck in neutral. She wanted adventure and love. Yet her love life was non-existent, with only fantasies of hot sex and being dominated keeping her company. Lacking in human companionship, she felt blessed to have her devoted dog, Toto. He was her solace. Little did she know, her dog had a big secret and an even greater destiny. Fantasy - novella TBR reviewer: Brutally Honest ReviewThis is a new erotic take on The Wizard of Oz. It sounded like a fabulous twist but things went very wrong. The prologue was a mess. We’re thrown into a scene, it’s obvious where we are as I’ve seen the movie, but the author rushes this drastically. Very little details with no surroundings. There’s a scene where Dorothy is attacked and Toto has to shift and save her. He does turn into a naked human, kicks the attackers butts and then turns back into the beloved pooch. This is all before Dorothy opens her eyes. One question: Who did she think made the attackers run off? She doesn’t even wonder why the attempted rape just stopped. That gave the story such an unrealistic feel and the characters a swift kick into the downward spiral. Then we come to a rainbow colored twister and train which was unique. It still needed a lot of work both editing and fleshing out. It was so very choppy and read like an outline. From here Dorothy and Toto land from the twister. It gets so hard to even try to enjoy this book. The writing is extremely rushed and choppy. One minute Toto and Dorothy are in a land with strange fauna and flora (I don’t know how strange as the author used no details) Toto is looking for shelter as the night approaches. The next few feet they’re in a desert walking for hours. What happened to sunset? Then Toto finds a cave and he huddles together with Dorothy to keep her warm. Weren’t they in a desert? These inconsistencies really ruined the book. As the stories progress the characters change, they become one dimensional and then there’s the editing issues. As I stated above, a mess. Finding Home had so much potential but the author needs more practice and a better editor. Purchase HereReview: Clockwork Genie by Kevin Broden 12/11/2011
Fantasy - Novel TBR reviewer: Mark BlurbCecilia Orchard lives alone. She writes fantasy and mystery stories to escape a humdrum data entry job that barely pays for her apartment, food, and bus fare. Then a handsome police detective arrives with news that she is the prime suspect in the murder of her grandfather whom she never knew existed. If inheriting a fortune from a man she doesn't know isn't madness enough, Cecilia finds herself the owner of a powerful genie that could make all her dreams come true, but what are her dreams and is she willing to make the wish? ReviewAspiring writer, Cecilia Orchard is having a very strange week. First she discovers that she is sole heir to the Billionaire estate of a Grandfather she never knew she had, then she discovers that she is the prime suspect in his murder. And if that's not all, she is also the proud new owner of her Grandfather's Genie who lives in a pocket watch! Whatever happened to her life being simple? This was a bit of a strange read. It sounded like something that might be a bit quirky and different, which is why I decided to pick it up, but I can honestly say that my end impressions were a disappointing. It reads a little like a Detective story, a traditional whodunnit, but with paranormal and other-worldly influences thrown into the mix but that was not my problem. My problem was that the main characters that we are supposed to care about, read like caricatures of themselves and just felt a bit too two-dimensional and under-developed for my liking. The romance aspect of Clockwork Genie felt a bit clumsily done and never really came together. Cecilia is an interesting character in and of herself but those around her were mostly just vacuous. The culprit of the crime was obvious very early on and not just that, when you thought the book had come to a fairly tidy conclusion then the story continued on with, what I felt, an unnecessary slant added merely to boost the word count! One of the most important factors in writing fiction is creating believable characters and if you get that wrong, then everything else pretty much falls flat. This is Broden's first full-length novel but, to my mind, it never really quite gelled and that is a crying shame as this had so much potential that it never quite managed to live up to. I really wanted to like this but the whole thing just didn't seem to tick any of my boxes. Genies are an under-used concept that don't appear very often in modern-day fiction so this book was always going to get off to a good start by breaking the mold as it were. But unfortunately, this particular tale just couldn't hold the pace and ended up falling at the very first hurdle. Purchase HereReview: Worth His Freedom by Adonis Devereux 12/09/2011
Historical, Erotica - Novel TBR reviewer: B.H. BlurbMiria, a young noblewoman on the cusp of an arranged marriage, meets the Ausir Tsalrin, her father's mysterious assassin, and sparks fly immediately. Tsalrin is trapped by an ancient curse, and Miria cannot escape her father or the husband to whom he would sell her, a man who sees her merely as a political tool. Miria and Tsalrin's position is impossible, but neither one will give up their hidden love. Theirs is a story of struggle against abuse, bigotry, and paterfamilias. Their love is both their greatest danger and their only comfort as they search for their mutual freedom. ReviewI really wanted to like Worth His Freedom. It was on my to-read list since the ‘coming soon’ page on Evernight Publishing website. When I read the blurb, I bumped it up on my list and when it was in my hand, well my nook, I was giddy with excitement. This has the same time period as the TV show Spartacus: Blood and Sand with the whole Domina and Dominus thing. I loved the TV show, which made me crave this book. This would have a romantic twist and make a great entertaining read. The problem was the plot holes. Just because the author understands the plot, doesn’t mean the reader will grasp it as clearly. How is a guy with pointy ears locked up, going to help the Mirius house gain top spot? The author eventually spells this out but pages later which left more questions and confusions. Talk about confusing, the father and two brothers are named Mirius. What on earth?! Maybe it was an editing issue. Miria was a good character; she seemed to have sweet innocence and a sense of depth. As did our main male character, pointed ear man, Tsalrin. From their introduction, we get new characters, along with all the Mirius’s and very little on background. After a few encounters Miria and Tsalrin are willing to run off together? They had no chemistry yet and that made this twist unbelievable. What really made me downgrade Worth His Freedom was the use of words that had no explanation. Jared? I’m sure she didn’t mean the modern jewelry store. Skenje? Basur Yoke? I could go on and on with these terms. Are they species? House names? What? I feel like this is Ms. Devereux’s first book, I could be wrong. Though this wasn’t a recommended read for me there was a lot of potential stuffed between the bad and I for one will be giving another book by her a try. Join Ares, Alena, and Raven as she bring Christmas and Yuletide to Olympus. This bit of romantic happiness contains graphic adult material. ReviewI admit, what first grabbed my attention was the cover. It is smoking hot. The blurb further intrigued me and I picked Christmas Eve on Olympus to review. The beginning was such a contradiction to the ending, well the second half. It was rushed with lots of telling. I felt like I was reading an outline for a book rather than a story. There were no surrounding details, I had no idea what the ‘fortress’ looked like. There were scenes with head hopping and words missing from sentences. Despite all that I read on. As Ares, God of War, and Alena, his wife, put their child to bed in preparation for Santa’s arrival everything changes. The pace slows (A good thing), the dialogue becomes crisp and I can really see the love between Ares and Alena. There’s no more telling, head hopping or rushing. The second half of this story was really well written. I love the candy cane sucking line, ha! I will also be purchasing some peppermint oil. Christmas Eve on Olympus was a cute story and shows a lot of promise for the authors other publications. This isn’t some mind blowing story that will change your life but it will get you hot and smiling for the season. I will be checking out Ms. Darling’s other books based on this read. I for one have them on my to-read list and look forward to delving deeper into her worlds. Free here! |
