To go where no erotic fantasy novel has gone before...the realm of comedy!
Mariah Smith, aka "The Judge," is a sword-wielding, potion-packing vigilante who metes out justice with evil spells rather than a gavel. She's a member of the magical Vizzini family, so as expected, they are engaged in a blood feud with another powerful clan, the Dragos. In a plot as old and familiar as Romeo & Juliet, complications arise when Mariah's would-be target, famous super-hunk Fabian, a member of the Dragos, becomes her lover instead of her enemy.
Add in shapeshifting demons, Latin incantations, ancient artifacts, an express elevator to Hell, and we have a bewildering brew of non-stop, occasionally non-sensical action with unexpected and interesting twists and turns. Sex and romance are almost an afterthought in this fast-paced storyline that has everything but the proverbial kitchen sink thrown in. That said, I always have a soft spot for smart-ass heroines and Mariah is not only smart-ass but bad-ass, too. Same goes for heroes, like Fabian, who start out unlikeable but are redeemed somewhere along the way and become heroes in the end. You just know they were meant for each other!
The comedic voice in which it is written is the real star of this story, which starts out brilliantly in Mariah's recap of her life and how she came to be The Judge. I enjoyed many laugh-out-loud moments. From there it dips into the ridiculous at times, but soars to heights of satiric humor at others. The extreme spectrum of vocabulary used is quite something all on its own. Kudos to author Gail Kroger for being unafraid to push the envelope!
