Claire Layton expects the usual busy Saturday night at Harvest Bistro to be killer on her stilletto shod feet. She never imagines there’d be an actual murderer on the loose at her restaurant in rural Dry Creek, Nebraska. But when she discovers a customer dead in a dumpster, the killer demands she find the victim’s phone and flash drive or face fatal consequenses.

Jake Warrick, a cocky and mind-numbingly hot private investigator, becomes Claire’s unlikely ally in the search. Jake just wants to solve the case and get out of this hick town, but the diminutive and curvaceous Claire turns his plan upside down as they uncover a more complex crime than they ever imagined. The two bicker and banter like Tracy and Hepburn caught in a whirlwind of intense sexual attraction as they try to find the killer before it’s too late.

Up a Dry Creek captured my attention from the get go! When Claire finds a dead body in her garbage can, she becomes the target of a madman. Jake is brought in by the young girl’s family to investigate the murder and is instantly attracted to Claire. While fighting their attraction in order to find the person that killed the young woman, they soon realize that their sexual chemistry is more than either one can handle. As the investigation heats up, so do the feelings between Claire and Jake.  We soon learn that all is not well with the family that hired Jake and we are thrown into suspense filled drama.

If I had not heard it from the author’s own mouth, I would never have guessed this was Avery Flynn’s very first novel.  Her writing technique is very reminiscent of Lora Leigh, Lori Foster and Nora Roberts; who are three of my favorite authors.

Ms. Flynn knows exactly how to write a female lead; she knows that they can be vulnerable, yet fierce at the same time. She knows that not all women need an alpha male to solidify her as a person. Claire Layton is a tough as nails, smart-mouthed woman that I would definitely call my friend!!! Jake Warrick is the epitome of an alpha male, yet he knows when he has met his match in a woman.

I loved the ending of this book and can not wait to see what happens next in The Dry Creek Series!

Excerpt of 'Up A Dry Creek'

Desperate to put something in her mouth before she said something stupid, Claire reached for another slice of pizza but hesitated. Her hand hovered over the only piece left.

“We can arm wrestle for the last slice.” Jake’s voice warmed her skin as if he’d touched her.

Claire took in his thick biceps. Without thinking, she reached out toward him, but squashed the impulse. Memories of Brett had her on guard again. Jake was the definition of eye candy; pretty to look at, bad for her heart. Her hand switched course. She grabbed her beer and took a swig.

A mouthful of the dark liquid went down the wrong pipe. Coughing, she gasped for breath. Jake patted her back until she regained her normal breathing ability.

But his hand didn’t move. It stayed between her shoulder blades, fingers spread wide. Sparks shot outward from his palm through her body.

Her breath slowed. Awareness prickled her skin. She yearned for his touch. Everywhere. Her lips parted. Slowly, she turned around. His hand left a trail of fire as it slid down and around her body until it landed on the curve of her hip.

He brought up his other hand to brush a stray hair from her face. His slate blue eyes drew her in to his sexual orbit.

“You have some sauce right here.” His voice’s deep timbre sent an unmistakable signal to which her body responded. Her breasts became full and heavy. Her clit demanded attention.

He wiped the spot by the corner of her mouth with his thumb, then tracked the red liquid across her bottom lip. His head dipped lower. Hers moved up. When their lips met, thoughts of Brett and the Voice of Doom disappeared.

His firm tongue stroked her lips and begged to be let in. She opened and his tongue swept in. She wrapped her tongue around his, dared him to taste his fill. The hand on her hip tightened, and pulled her closer to his hard body. In return, her fingers found their way to the bottom of his T-shirt and started an upward exploration. His coarse chest hair tickled her palm, so alien and enticing at the same time.

His lips left hers and traced down her neck. He arrived at that sweet spot where her throat met her shoulder. Her spine dissolved as he sucked and nibbled.

“You taste so good,” he said, his breath hot against her skin.

The feel of his hands cupping her ass made it impossible to respond verbally other than to moan her appreciation. Her body slid up against his as he lifted her to sit on the kitchen counter. He yanked her closer. The hard bulge in his jeans rubbed against her in the perfect spot.

Every part of her, relaxed only a few minutes before, hummed with tension. Her nipples stiffened into tight nubs. She squeezed her legs around Jake’s waist, her wet core snug against him. She clutched at his shirt, desperate to touch his skin. She needed him closer. Her body demanded it. The endorphins wrapped around her brain gave the go ahead.

She hiked up his shirt and ran her hands up his strong back, felt the tension within him. He tugged her scoop necked T-shirt lower and his lips descended to the top of her cleavage. He licked and kissed above her teal bra.

Claire’s butt started to vibrate.

Not Jake making my ass vibrate.

It was her phone stuffed into her back pocket. She had to stop to answer. Her body screamed no.

“Phone,” Claire panted. She pushed against Jake’s shoulders. “Have… to… answer… my… phone.”

He groaned into her breasts, put his hands on the counter on either side of her hips and lifted his head. The dark look in his eyes showed he hated this interruption as much as she did.

She got lost for a moment in those slate blue eyes. She wanted him. Now. Here on the counter next to the almost empty pizza box. The vibration stopped, but began again a second later. Jake swung her down so she stood again on the kitchen’s taupe tile.

“You’d better answer that.” He backed away, his desire palpable.

Claire reached into her back pocket, warm from Jake’s touch, and pulled out the scarlet phone.

“Hello?” Her voice sounded breathy to her own ears.

“You know, I don’t like to work this hard for the things I want. Do you understand what I’m telling you?”

Panic exploded in her stomach at the first syllable from the Voice of Doom. Claire looked up at Jake, who cocked his head in question.

“I understand. You want the phone and flash drive, but I don’t have them. I looked everywhere.”

Jake stepped closer. He leaned his head toward the phone. She angled it outward so he could listen.

“Your lack of results have, well… Sweetheart, I’m not the kind of guy you want angry.” His voice pitched lower. “Lucky for me, I’m not angry. I. Am. Furious.”

Claire’s temper snapped. Again. This nutcase killed Kendall. He threatened her and her family. He trashed her house. And he had the gall to go all drama king on her for something she didn’t have and couldn’t find? She’d had enough.

“Welcome to the club asshole, because I’m not too happy myself after the job you did on my house.”

“Just wait, Kitten, you haven’t seen anything yet.” He hung up on her. Again.

But will Damon’s enigmatic shock jock persona become Julie’s sexual undoing and reveal Damon as the missing piece that solves the puzzling questions surrounding her friend’s death?

This is a modern day tale of sleeping beauty with kink. CPA Julie has spent her life taking care of everyone else until the death of her best friend sends her on a solo mission to uncover the truth. She dons a disguise and persona that awakens a slumbering beast inside her. Beast, thy name is Sensuality.  Her libido is thrown into overdrive when her mission takes her to a club where exhibition and sex go hand in hand. When she tangles with our hero their consummation is passionate and more personal than either intends.

Dark and mysterious with a goo filled center his persona hides away.  Damon is the best of both worlds.  Intelligent and sensitive he’s forced to play a role he despises to survive.  Julie see’s through his guise and together they take a journey through a wonderland of sexual exploration that may make some squirm .The  mystery that surrounds her best friend Jason’s death takes her to a seedy under world unlike any she’s ever been exposed to

I don’t want to show my knowledge of Shrek, but these characters have layers like onion. Each time Nina peels away more skin we learn something we didn’t know, or expect. Nina has a way with mystery. She tells the reader just enough to make them think they have the puzzle solved. Only to turn around and reveal they were dead wrong. Blind love has it all. A romance that ranges from sweet, to sensual, to holy crap my eyes may fall out of their sockets. Characters that are well develop and a setting you relate to from the first paragraph.

This book surpassed my expectations and I would def recommend it as a read. I have to repeat though that this is not for those with vanilla taste, we get some m/m loving, along with sexual exhibition and hints of BDSM.

They are real.

They are the harbingers of the Apocalypse.

And only one woman stands between them and us.

THE FOUR HORSEMEN is a race-against-the-clock thriller starring Andie Sullivan. As the world's only "culturalist," she is employed by corporations and wealthy individuals to break through the barriers with any culture around the globe. Now, she faces the most challenging and dangerous assignment of her career. Hired by a ruthless businessman to infiltrate the mysterious tribe who serve as the protectors of the Four Horsemen's ancient secret, Andie is plunged into a mysterious world where every answer only opens the door to more questions. With a shadowy government force and a brutal terrorist also vying for the Horsemen's unfathomable power, Andie must collect them all and unlock their mysteries before time runs out.

Review

Picture
Let me start off Yes, I am a romance author.  But I am a sucker for a good apocalyptic thriller.  Therefore I was rooting for this story from the minute I read the blurb.

The Four Horsemen is an imaginative, dark and detailed story.  That begins with a tribe of nomadic people entrusted with a deadly secret 3,000 years ago. The secret is threatened with a man of great power and greed seeks to unleash the four things that could end life as we know it. One by one our characters lives intersect as they are drawn into the lies, danger and mystery that is the search for the Four Horseman.

The legend that kicks thing off is fresh and interesting, though a bit long winded.  I had high hopes for how it would continue.   Mr. Sussman presented me with something I had not seen before.

The book opens with the intelligent, tough and savvy lead heroine, Andi, on a business deal in Scotland. The setting is dark and rich with detail as we learn about her skill set. A whiz with cultures of any kind she’s often sought for negotiations. Her foundation was laid well, but the information continued to flood me until my eyes balls were swimming. Admittedly the facts and tidbits were interesting.   So I was persuaded to wait the slow period out. Convinced it would explode at any minute.

The detonation I anticipated fizzled when Andie was swapped for a completely unconnected character. Troy.   Now don’t get me wrong. I like Troy, I really do. He made me laugh, shake my head and say. “What the hell were you thinking?” But he didn’t fit. Even as the trouble he’d fallen into led him on the path of the Four Horseman, I had an uneasy feeling in my gut.

The story line disconnects and throws you out of your seat. Sort of like when you slam on the breaks in your car to avoid the jerk that’s come to a dead halt in front of you. I waited for a recovery, but it never came.  I’d compare this story to a body without a soul. Emotion was severally lacking. Not only in the lead Andi who was so cold she could melt ice. I decided I had enough of her long before the book ran it’s course. I am all for a badass woman in charge. I’ve always preferred heroin’s who kick ass and take names. But when she’s a combination of Velma and Daphne; saving the day, solving the problem and looking beautiful, twenty-four seven. She becomes annoying. Characters need flaws and a personality to be believable and engaging.   Point in case; when someone’s fiancée dies mysteriously and they have a inkling of who did it. They do not go to work for said person within a twenty-four hour period.  (N0, it wasn’t’ some grand scheme to nail his balls to the wall. That I would’ve approved of.)I’m just saying.

Pretty words artfully arranged are nice, but won’t carry a story.  I wanted to be able to recommend this book. But too much head hoping, and a unclear explanation of the volumes of information given prevents me from doing so.  With some fine tuning Ben Sussman could write a story that would knock the most skeptical of readers on his ass. I hope his next tale he does.

Excerpt of 'The Four Horsemen'

The wind carried screams in its tail.

Rivkah heard them and burst from her tent, knowing that they belonged to her mother.  As she ran, sand stinging her eyes, blue scarf flapping, she heard others from the tribe emerge with her.  Feet flying over the dunes, she scanned the ground, searching.

Suddenly, she stumbled on a bulky object and pitched forward, crashing hard into the ground.

A moan rose up from where she had fallen.  Rivkah crawled on her hands and knees until she found a heap of rags on the desert floor.

“Mother?” she asked, her voice tinged with fear and incredulity.

The shadowy shape stirred and Rivkah found herself staring into the face of a woman she hardly recognized.  Her mother’s blonde hair was stringy and matted with dirt.  The fine lines and planes of her face were covered in filth.  It had been four days since her mother had left for the mountains and they had apparently been cruel ones.  Upon seeing Rivkah, however, her lips were broken by a weak smile.

“My child,” Miryam struggled to say.  “I told you I would return.”

“Let me help you,” Rivkah managed to lift her to a sitting position, eliciting another piercing scream.  Miryam fell back into the sand.  As she did, a tied sack she had been clutching tumbled to the ground.

The woman mumbled something unintelligible.  Rivkah bent her head to hear the words.  “Asherah,” was all she could discern.  Was she praying to the goddess for help?

“Mother,” she said softly, “what happened on the mountain?”

The words came between shuddering breaths.  “I saw the goddess herself, child.  Asherah met me on the mountaintop and gave me these,” she gestured at the bag, which shifted from some unseen force in its center.  “She was angry and that anger is a terrible thing.  People were already forgetting her.  Squeezing her out of the histories or smearing her name.”

Rivkah nodded, understanding.  Asherah had been known for centuries as the revered wife of Yahweh, the queen of heaven.  Yet now, with the Israelites embracing the one-God concept, her existence was problematic. Rivkah’s tribe was the only one that had remained dedicated followers and it was the reason that they had been banished from their beloved homeland.

“Because of our loyalty, she has entrusted us with a great secret.”  Again, Miryam looked down to the bag.  “What sits here has the power to destroy all mankind, fashioned by the dark forces.  Asherah stole them away, placed them in our care.”

She shifted and her tunic fell open, causing Rivkah to draw a sharp intake of breath.  Covering her mother’s side was a trail of dark burn marks, raw and red in the moonlight.

She felt the pinch of her mother’s hand on her arm and then her face was inches away.  Desperate, pleading eyes bored into hers.

“I’m dying,” she croaked.

“No-“

“Listen!  It is your responsibility now.  You must take them, hide them.”

“Where?”

A small man with dark flowing robes had appeared at their side, the tribe’s healer.  “My queen!” he gasped, upon seeing Miryam.  He began to pull at her arm, gently urging her back to the camp.  Her hand caught him in the nose, sending him backwards.

“One will come, one like us,” she continued, reaching out to caress a strand of Rivkah’s golden hair.  With a moan of pain, her fingers yanked away as she doubled over.

The healer was tugging at her again, insisting that she must come back to the camp if he were to help.

Miryam pushed the sack towards Rivkah, who reached out and grabbed its side.

A lightning bolt of hot agony shot up her arm, causing her to cry out.

“They are our burden until we can send them away,” her mother warned her.

Rivkah nodded in acceptance, bringing a gaze of affection to Miryam’s face.  She flung her arms around her mother, holding tight as she felt the life draining away.

“What if I fail?” the girl whispered.

She waited for an answer but it never came.  Pulling back, she noted her mother’s slack jaw and glassy eyes.  Death had come for Miryam.

Just as destiny had come for Rivkah.

Daisy Wellfleet needs a husband if she means to keep control of her grandfather’s hotel. Lawrence Bailey, wounded in a mine explosion, needs somewhere to recuperate. For a marriage of convenience he sounds entirely suitable.

But the man who shows up, three days late, is not what she expected from his letters. He’s too healthy, too handsome, and generally just too much of everything. Now Daisy can only wish Lawrence Bailey would stop distracting her, before she falls in love— the last thing a fiercely independent woman needs.

And Lawrence Bailey has a secret. He’s just not himself. He’s not Lawrence Bailey at all, but Luke Blackwood. If only he could untangle everything, start at the beginning again. If only she’d let him get a word in edgeways, because falling in love is the last thing a sensible, solitary man needs.

This is book 2 in a series but each of them can be read as stand alone. The first novel, Engraved, I had the pleasure of reading and I rated 5 stars, loved it! Engraved was also June’s book of the month.  Let’s see if the second book is as great...

The Blackwood’s are at it again. This handsome brothers are nothing but heart melting trouble. This is Lucien’s story. He’s confronted by a beautiful woman named Daisy who thinks he’s her fiancé whom she never met. Meanwhile, he has a painting from his father’s collection of her. From there it all tangles into a crazy, lust filled adventure.

Ms. Fresina has a way of grabbing hold of the reader right away and creating a fun journey interweaved with romance. It was absolutely effortless to read this. I simply got lost in the beautiful world of 1888 that she painted with her words.

Even if you don’t like historical novels but love heartwarming romance I’d recommend Entangled by talented author Jayne Fresina. I can’t wait to read the third installment of ‘A Private Collection’!

Excerpt of 'Entangled':

Quickly, she looked down at her dish again, licking her spoon clean.  Had he just moved his chair closer or was it her imagination?  She wouldn’t have minded if he had.  His nearness made her skin come alive with anticipation.  It was almost as if she was on the verge of a fever.  Perhaps she’d had too much to drink tonight and the champagne bubbles put her over the edge, but everything they said suddenly seemed so much more significant, every gesture he made toward her more deeply felt.  Or was it his dangerous dessert that put her in this mood?

A man capable of making a swoon-worthy dessert like this was surely capable of any naughty trick.  She slowly licked the bowl of her spoon.

Guy wouldn’t know his way around a kitchen, but then he’d never needed to know and never would.  There were always people standing by to do things for him.  She supposed in many ways she was simply another of his minions.  Certainly the way he talked to her tonight, that was how he viewed her.

Lawrence Bailey, on the other hand, was a survivor who knew how to take care of himself.  He relied on no one else. Knowing all about survival, she’d felt that kindred spark the moment they met.  His attempts to seem sickly and weak had failed miserably because she’d seen through him.  I need you, he’d said to her.  But he didn’t need her at all.  He wanted her.  That was different.

And she wanted him.

“Kiss me,” she said suddenly, dropping her spoon, pushing her chair back across the flagged stone floor.

Startled, he looked at her, his glass paused halfway to his lips.

She stood, finished off her champagne with one unladylike gulp, set her flute down, and repeated, “Kiss me.  What are you waiting for, man? Christmas? An embroidered invitation?”

He was on his feet before the last word was completely out of her mouth.  Her arms went around his broad shoulders and she gave herself to the kiss as if she needed it to sustain her life.  His tongue tangled with hers and the table groaned as it moved across the flagged stone.  The candles trembled just as she did and dimly she was aware of her empty glass tipping as her hip knocked into it.

Lawrence caught it in one hand.  “If I keep kissing you like this, you know what will happen?”

She nodded mutely, grabbed the collar of his robe and pulled him close again, her head falling back, the pins loosening, hair falling free.

* * * *

So she liked chocolate. Lucky guess.  He hadn’t quite anticipated this effect, however, and doubted it could all be contributed to the pudding.  Her evening with Guy Westerfield must not have gone well.  He dare not think it was anything he’d said to her earlier in the conservatory.  He was only surprised his saucy questions hadn’t earned him a slapped face.

Lifting her onto the table, he pressed another kiss to her mouth, his hands quickly discarding hairpins, tangling his fingers in all those luxurious copper curls.  He’d dreamed of this since he first saw her in his father’s painting with her hair long and loose about her naked body.  He wanted to devour her as she’d devoured that dessert, licking her bowl clean. But he wasn’t accustomed to women making the demands.  Luke Blackwood was always in control.  He’d have to get a firmer grip of the situation before it got out of hand.  He reminded himself that he was supposed to tell her the truth tonight.  The chocolate dessert and the champagne were meant to smooth the way for a confession.

It wasn’t working out that way.

Tongue plunging deep, he moved her back across the table while her fingers hung on to his collar.   It couldn’t have been very comfortable lying on the rough wood, but she made no complaint. Her eyes were hot, a few shades darker than usual, her bronze lashes half-lowered. He felt every excitable breath she took, her splendid breasts almost popping out of the flimsy gown.  Lowering his head, he nibbled her ear, the side of her neck, and then the warm curve of her bosom until she purred like a playful kitten, arching under him, her hands fumbling for the belt of his robe.   He grabbed her questing hands and stood straight, looking down at her.  He ought to tell her the truth before they were both in over their heads.

Instead he asked, “Do you want some more chocolate, Daisy?”

She blinked.  “Ummmm.”

He transferred both her wrists to his left hand and pulled them up over her head, holding them to the table.  With his right hand he reached for the dish of sweet dessert he’d left uneaten.  “Are you sure?  You shouldn’t over-indulge.”

“I want some more,” she purred. “Please.”

Swallowing a chuckle, he dug his forefinger into the creamy, whipped pudding and brought it to her lips.  She almost bit his finger off at the knuckle.

“Now say ‘thank you, sir’.”

His finger still in her mouth, she turned her head to look at the dish.

“You want more? Greedy aren’t you?”  He reclaimed his finger and it made a slight pop as it slid free of her pouting lips.  “I suppose I can let you have a little more of mine.”

“Yes, please.” She sounded breathless and he felt her pulse racing where he held her wrists in his firm grip.  Unable to resist temptation, he bent his head to lick her heaving breasts, trailing his tongue across her warm flesh and into the deep cleavage between.  With his free hand, he slid her skirts and frothy petticoats up over her knees and she parted her legs.

“How much more do you want?” he murmured huskily into her skin, breathing in her light, sweet scent until it flooded his veins.

The plot is good, but it wasn't an engaging read.

The book starts when Joe, the protagonist, finds out that his wife is cheating on him with his best friend. He throws everything away and decides to restore an old, abandoned theater. There, he encounters a community of magical dance performers and feels like he finally found a place he belongs.

The story itself wasn't strong enough to keep me reading. I wasn't "immersed" into their world. The narrative is too passive and he accepted this strange magical world so quickly.  I didn't have any questions that needed an answer. I didn't feel a connection to the characters to like them. A lot of  things were just random as well. It was so disjointed.

Mr. Bridger has lots of potential. I saw it in there but it's not quite up to par yet. I hope to read his second novel in this series and find that his writing as well as his characters have grown.

Excerpt of 'Quarter Square':

I watched Carole and Tony eating breakfast for a while before they noticed me.
They looked more like a married couple than Carole and I ever had. Well dressed in similar styles and exuding the same casual confidence, like two peas in a pod. How come I’d never noticed that before? Too busy with my own stuff, I supposed. Certainly that was how things had been for the past year or so. Too concerned with the new direction my life was taking and always on the defensive against Carole’s complaints about the changes.

She saw me first, and Tony’s shoulders tensed in response to her expression. I paused by their table without making eye contact and told them, “I’ll wait for you upstairs.”

A waiter noticed me and moved to lay another place at their table, but I shook my head. This time yesterday I’d been enjoying a full English. Today I didn’t belong.
Somehow it didn’t feel right to go into the hotel room I’d shared with Carole, but I didn’t have to wait in the corridor for long. I guess their appetites were no better than mine. Carole opened the door, and I made a beeline for the armchair with a view from the window. I didn’t want to look at them.

“I’m so sorry, love.” Carole was near to tears.

I stared out at a yacht sailing across Plymouth Sound. “Don’t call me love.”

“Joe…” Tony whined.

When I glared at him, he glanced at my white knuckles on the arms of the chair.

He licked his bottom lip, which was swollen and shiny.

“I’m not going to hit you again. You’re not worth it. Say your piece and let’s get this finished.”

Neither of them spoke.

“How long has it been going on?”

“For a while,” Carole admitted. “We’re in love, Joe. It isn’t just sex. We’d never do that to you.”

“How. Bloody. Long?”

Tony bit the bullet. “Nearly a year.”

“We were going to tell you,” Carole said. “Honestly, love. It was never the right time.”

“Well, now it is. Tell me.”

“We want to be together,” Tony said. “We didn’t want to hurt you.”

Enough was enough. I stood and prepared to leave.

“Hang on.” Tony extended his hand, his fingertips splayed and quivering slightly, as if I were a hot plate and he didn’t want to get burned. “We can’t leave it like this.”

“We should sort it out,” Carole said.

“We can sort it out later,” I replied. “Right now I don’t want talk to you.”
“Carole and I are going to live together,” Tony blurted. “We’re going back to London today. What will you do?”

What the hell did they expect me to do? Sit in the car with them? Make small talk? Hang around the house like a spare part while Carole packed up and left me? Well, none of those things were going to happen. That much was certain. But what was I going to do?

For a moment music echoed in the back of my mind: a woman’s voice, singing in the distance.

“I’m not going back. I’m staying here.”
