We are back in the world of Firefly! For those who don't know. Firefly was a short lived scifi series starting Nathan Fillion. This show was so beloved that they followed that up with a movie. These set of books take place between the show and when the movie came out.
Captain Malcolm Reynolds, aka Mal, aka Captain Tight Pants. He's got himself in a bit of a pickle. Not only is his crew transport might dangerous, explosive material but then he gets himself kidnapped. I liked the two stories going on at once, it kept the pace nicely done. Being in this world again was just amazing and nostalgic. I was too keen on the reason he was kidnapped but I did like the twist with the Alliance baring down on them with the stolen goods in the cargo bay. James Lovegrove did a fantastic job with the dialouge and details that reminded me of the show.
If you love Firefly you should absolutely be reading Big Damn Hero (ain't we just).

- Shadow Touched Interview by Beth D. Carter -
Where did the inspiration for Shadow Touched come from?
Believe it or not, from a Korean Drama tv show! It was about a daughter of a grim reaper. That led to me thinking about what would happen if a tough guy was confronted with something he couldn’t explain, and eventually, I brought in a motorcycle club president. Can’t get much tougher than that.
Was there as specific part of the story that you absolutely loved writing as well as not enjoyed writing?
In the story the hero, named Brim, has lost his son. The heroine helps him come to terms with his grief. There is one line that I’m so incredibly proud of: “It’s okay to miss him,” she murmured. “And it’s okay to be mad at him. At yourself. At God. At everyone.”
This whole scene, I think, is some of my best writing. I also put a lot of humor in my books, so I had fun with that. My goal is to make you think: “Did I read that right?”. Hopefully, you’ll find some parts really funny.
Tell us something about the novel that doesn’t appear on the blurb or the excerpt.
When I wrote this book, I hadn’t yet figured out all of book 2. By the time edits rolled around, I needed to change a few things to fit into that story. Book 2, titled Shadow Kissed, straddles the timeline of the first book. Half of it takes place before the journey of book 1, and the other half is after.
Did you plan all your characters out before you started this book?
No, actually, I didn’t. I had an idea of what I wanted but I knew where it had to go. I was very surprised when I decided to visit Kix and Piper (from my book Unbroken). It was a lot of fun to imagine what their future had turned into.
Please give us a sneak peek at the sequel. What’s on the horizon?
Book 2, titled Shadow Kissed, is about the VP of the Death Riders. He saves a woman from a burning building and when he breathes life back into her, she starts to get visions of him. I’ve also set up the characters for the next installment. I branched off to write a mafia romance story that is connected to the events at the end of Shadow Kissed. That book is titled The Mafia King’s Siren, and I really enjoyed writing that. I’ll probably venture back into the mafia world at some point.

They have the killer on video and yet no one can see his face… Brett and Genius are on another case. This one involves a series of robberies where elderly victims are murdered. They have no idea how the victims are chosen or when the next one will be targeted. Their only clue is a video of the killer and his face is blurred. What invention could do that? Even Genius is stumped. As they look for suspects, the heat between them intensifies. Neither man has forgotten the kiss they shared and Genius wants a lot more than Brett’s lips. |
- Sneak Peek -
“Morning. I, um, I just wanted to return this to you before I forgot.” Now that Brett said it out loud, he cringed. That sounded so fucking lame. This was a bad idea.
“You came here at seven AM to return a tie.” Genius opened the door wider. “Keep it. It looked great on you.”
Brett blushed. “Oh. Thanks. Well, I’m off today, but I’ll see you at work tomorrow.”
Genius waved his hand. “You came here for more than a tie, Brett. Come in for a cup of coffee. It’s too early to function after the night we had without caffeine.”
Brett couldn’t argue that. He went into the apartment, closing the door behind him. He still couldn’t believe how big this place was. It looked like a mansion compared to his own apartment. What sort of tech did he have in here? Brett was genuinely curious.
Genius came back into the lavish but comfortable living room with two cups of coffee. He placed them on the glass table and flopped onto the couch. The robe edge slid up his bare thigh.
Oh, hell. “I can’t really stay.”
“You’re going to waste a cup of coffee?”
Shit. No. That was like a sin. Brett sat at the end of the couch, but Genius was square in the middle. He held the ceramic cup in his hands and took a sip. Oh, fuck, that tasted good. Genius definitely knew how to make a good cup of coffee, and that was one of Brett’s weaknesses. “Delicious.” His voice had gone raspy. This would be the perfect time to talk about how bad of an idea them having sex would be. “Is Zia still here?” He didn’t want her to hear anything that would scar her for life.
“She left half an hour ago. Early study group. So, it’s just us.”
They were alone in the apartment? He took another sip of coffee. “Genius.”
“Ah, ready to talk, then.” He put down his cup.
“Yes, I am. I like you, Genius, but work is too…” Brett didn’t get a chance to finish. Genius leaned over and kissed him. The moment their lips met, his thoughts scattered. He opened his mouth as Genius slid his tongue inside. Passion ignited like a fucking volcano. Brett kissed back, his hands moving to Genius’s robe.
He shrugged it off, shifting to his knees.
The kiss continued as Genius advanced, lying on top of him. Brett opened his legs, letting the other man settle between them. The air warmed between them. Genius’s hands roamed up his shirt. Brett had never been so happy not to be wearing a work shirt. Those buttons would have been scattered everywhere, and he wouldn’t have even cared.
Genius broke the kiss only to trail his lips down Brett’s neck. He shifted his hands higher until he found that chest and those nipple rings. He tugged on one, making Brett groan. A moment later, Genius was sitting as he shoved Brett’s shirt up. The man leaned over and sucked the gold hoop piercing into his mouth.
Oh, fuck. Brett grabbed his head, his fingers skimming through silky hair. It had been a long time since he’d felt this much lust. His whole body was taut, muscles rigid, and his cock was a beast. It strained at his sweatpants like they were a confining cage made for torture.
Genius let go of Brett long enough to haul his shirt off. He threw it behind the couch and went back to those nipple rings.
Kissing. Tugging with his teeth. Licking. Brett let out a low groan, and then that talented mouth was kissing lower. Genius played his tongue around Brett’s belly button. Anticipation made him gasp for breath. He’d been dreaming about this. Thinking about this nonstop. Even before he’d met Genius, he’d been attracted to his image. Now that the man was in his arms, it was like a wet dream come true.

A disease is loose in the world, creating vampire zombies. The government is in chaos. Neighbors are killing neighbors and two kids are trying to make their way to the city to find their family. Ember and Sam fight the impossible to survive. This is their story. Told from their point of view. This is how they saved the world.
What a freaking amazing story! I loved so much of this it's hard to get it all down. Ember is just a regular girl who is given a 'flu shot' from her father. Next thing she knows there are people eating people and burning in the sun. She is scared but strong. Sam is her funny sidekick, best friend and love interest. They are perfect together. As the story progresses you can see why they should end up together. Then a handsome actor comes into the picture and it's sort of hard to tell who she is going to pick.
Ember and sam are telling their story to a film crew. It's wild and crazy, full of action and sizzle. However, Ember is infected but survives. Now the government could kill her. I could not wait to get to that ending. I had no idea if the author was going to take the heartbreaking route or go for a happily ever after!

Ember took a shaky breath and lifted her shirt.
His gaze went right to the wound. The bite. “No. No!” He fell to his knees before her. “It could be from the fall, the roll, the car accident.”
Ember shook her head. “Sam. It bit me. I could be infected.” God, those words were hard to say. She took a shaky breath as her vision blurred.
“We don’t know that. It might not be transferred like that.” He hugged her to him.
Ember felt the tears slide down her cheeks as she looked down at him. Her Sam. He glanced up at her, tears shimmering on his cheeks.
“I can’t lose you, Em.”
She was already gone. She’d help him find a house to stay in and be safe then she’d slink off in the middle of the night. Ember hadn’t planned what to do after that.
“There could be a cure already. You may not even be infected. Maybe it’s airborne.” He kept talking, sprouting new hopeful theories.
Ember gazed into his beautiful green eyes and ruffled his red hair with her hand. “I really do love you, Sam.” She took a breath. “But if I am infected, I’m not safe.” She didn’t want to leave him, but staying would be too risky.
“You might not be.”
“But if I am.”
“If doesn’t mean you are,” he shouted and shoved to his feet.
Ember blinked away the gathering tears and hugged him. She held him as close as she could for as long as she could. Then she tilted her head back and placed her lips on his. It shocked them both. The subtle, soft touch. She lingered, poured her feelings through that kiss like a love letter. Sam reciprocated, sending her stomach into a fit of nerves and excitement. Ember pulled back, ran her hands through the red hair she loved, and stared into the beautiful blue eyes. Then the sun got brighter. She had to blink and lower her head. It was too vivid. When had it gotten so intense? She felt like she was staring directly at it even though she was looking at the ground. Ember let go of Sam. She shook her head. Her knees gave way.
“Em?”
Oh, God, it was happening already. She tried to crawl away, but her skin was so hot. Sam clutched her. He pulled her to him and they sat by the truck with her head in his lap. She closed her eyes when the shine became too powerful. “Run, Sam.” She didn’t want to hurt him.

Will this case come between the couple or will Lily find herself closer to evil than ever before?
Read an Excerpt
Black River reminded James of one thing: murder.
Hidden in dense foliage, the river stretched out far beyond his view and also happened to be a perfect spot to dump a body. He had no doubt there had been many missing people over the years who wound up weighed down by rocks at the bottom of the river until their flesh disintegrated into nothing.
His boss, Donald Abrams had a bad habit of telling him about their worst cases, probably to freak him out. The sicko with the garden of people floating upright like weeds was particularly gruesome. The chills he got from that one made the hairs on his neck stand up. However, since Manorview’s crime rate was low, James wasn’t entirely sure if the stories were folklore or not.
“Congrats on your last case. I heard you’re a big boss detective now,” Rick said as he reeled in his empty line.
James impaled a worm on his hook and swung the line out into the water. “Thanks. I wouldn’t say big boss though. More like maybe I’ll get to keep my job.”
“Have you ever caught anything here?” Rick asked.
“No, but I hear there’s trout.”
And bodies.

Vampires and werewolves are loose in The Bronx. They’re not looking to make friends but rule the neighborhood in a supernatural gang war. Taina has dealt with them once before, when they killer her family. Now she back for her revenge…
Taina was dealing with a lot of trauma from her families fiery death. I like how she was determined to do the right thing, no matter the cost. However, she was not tough enough to get that revenge. I’m not sure why she came back to The Bronx when she was so clearly unprepared. Arnaldo was a former addict, reformed to a good guy trying to do good and he wants to help her. Together they began an uneasy alliance that was sexually charged. I really liked the action and romance balance in the book. There was a lot of character introduction in the beginning that was a bit hard to follow. This felt more like the second book in a series rather than the first. I did like the addition of the sweet zombie that collects cans. There are also witches. This story has a nice mix of paranormal.
Void of Course was a promising start in a new series!

Jules is having a rough time with men. Evan is having a rough time with women. They both decide to quit looking for love and enjoy nature for a little while. Mother nature decides to play matchmaker and thrust them together. Did they finally find the right pairing or is this just another bad decision?
I wasn’t sure what to expected when I started reading this book. My contemporary choices lately have not been hits. So, I was a bit weary when I open the eBook and then I fell into the wonderful, sweet, sexy, funny world of Stacy Gold. Jules was just having one day after another but that doesn’t compare to Evan’s luck. Add that to them both being stuck out in the wilderness and let the fun begin. Or rather, the action, romance, flirting and humor. Seriously, this book had it all. Why not rate it 5 stars you ask? I was absolutely going to but the point of view threw me. Both main characters switch first person point of views. That made reading the story a bit tricky and hard to follow at times. Still, I did enjoy the book very much. This was my first book by Stacy Gold and I sure hope to read more (preferably with a different point of view style).
Wild at Heart is a fun, sweet romance, especially if you’re going camping.
I wasn’t sure what to expected when I started reading this book. My contemporary choices lately have not been hits. So, I was a bit weary when I open the eBook and then I fell into the wonderful, sweet, sexy, funny world of Stacy Gold. She's all he ever wanted and the one thing he can't have... As an ER nurse, Gemma Leight needs to escape into fantasy when she gets home from work. But when the sexy vampire anti-hero in the dark fantasy TV show she loves looks at her and speaks her name, she thinks maybe she’s taken her “fantasy” a little too far. Skarde Blackmann, mercenary monster hunter, is at a loss, stuck in a world of people that need his skills but abhor him. To say life is lonely is an |
understatement.
Until Gemma.
She appears from nowhere, announces he needs a vacation, and awakens everything in side him. But the things he wants are forbidden and if he gives into his desires, it will spell ruin for them both.

With all the books on my list to read, I didn't get to The Night slayer until now and that is a shame. What a great book! I found myself sinking into the story several times and annoyed that I waited this long to read this new author to me.
I loved Gemma. She's an ER nurse with an open mind and a lonely life. She wants more but when her fantasy comes true, it's a bit shocking. Skarde (still not sure how to pronounce that) is a badass monster hunter. I like how well the romance is mixed with the dangerous action. There are also several secondary characters that stood out. I'd definitely want to read their story. This is a stand alone but I think it would make a great series.
If you like romance and action packed paranormal books then The Night Slayer should be on your list to read!
