Jacey Holbrand and Elizabeth Monvey are happy to present the second book – Future, Betrayed – in the Project Mars series they’ve developed. They’ve been having fun creating a futuristic world in which humans are living and loving on Earth and on Mars while fighting to survive the outrageous ministrations of rogue scientists in an agency called Sector. They have four books so far in the works in the series. Book one – Future, Broken – is available through eTailers. Books three and four, as of this writing, are works in progress. But for now, here’s an interview with Dain from Future, Betrayed:
- Do you and your significant other have a favorite place to vacation? If so, where is it and why? Ben and I met on vacation in Florida but we’re completely opposite in where we like to relax. Ben is more sand, sun and ocean while I like the mountains and hiking. But I sure am glad I decided to go against my comfort level! - What's your superpower, or what's your spirit animal? Why? Hmmm. I’m not really one of those people who believes in mysticism or spirit animals, so I’ll go with a superpower. I’d have to say protecting those I love is my greatest strength. I’d do anything for my family. - What’s your favorite thing to do and why? Being with my husband, Ben. He makes me laugh. - What are some of your dislikes? I’m not overly fond of Brussel sprouts. - If you could go back in time for one day, where would you go? I would go back to the moment when I met Ben. My world changed. Everything became brighter. Happier. The chaos that had been in my head quieted. I would love to relive that moment when my world suddenly made sense. - What is your greatest fear? Obviously, having something happen to Ben is my worst nightmare. - What is your greatest hope? A world where my family and I can live in peace.

Drake Park has a complicated life. As a gay male midwife, he’s used to raising eyebrows. Add Crohn’s disease and things get interesting—or not, considering the sad state of his love life. Experience has taught Drake that most men are fair-weather sailors when it comes to handling his condition—gone for dust when things get rough. Staying healthy is a full-time job without adding in any heartbreak, so a little loneliness is a small price to pay. If he says it often enough he might even believe it. One thing for sure, the cop who arrested him isn’t about to change that. Caleb Ashton does not have a complicated life. A senior |
detective with the Whangarei Police Department, he likes his job and is good at it. He works hard and plays hard, happy to enjoy as many men as he can while he’s still young enough—or at least he was. These days he feels adrift for the first time in his life, and the only thing sparking his interest—a certain prickly young midwife.
But can Drake find enough faith to risk opening his heart again? And does Caleb have what it takes to cope with the challenges Drake’s condition presents?

Jay Hogan discuses Digging Deep...
Why Crohn’s Disease, I hear you ask? There are so many difficult conditions people live with, so what made me choose Crohn’s Disease?
A couple of reasons. Although I don’t have Crohn’s, I have experienced a condition with some similarities, and so I related to some of the issues on a personal level. Also, in another life as a nurse, I looked after people with this frustrating and difficult condition, and some conversations from that time still stand out in my head. Also, Crohn’s comes with its own set of social stigmas linked to any talk about bowel stuff, which seemed an interesting match to the social stigmas around talking about gay sex.
There has even been some research done around whether people with Crohn’s share a few similar concerns about ‘coming out’ about their Crohn’s to others, in the way that LGBTQIA people ‘come out’, and whether things can be learned from the LGBTQIA community to help those with Crohn’s. This is of course particularly interesting if the person with Crohn’s is also LGBTQIA.
Conversations around bodily functions aren’t common or comfortable in our society and we often struggle to even tell our doctors when we have what we think of as embarrassing symptoms. It is one of the biggest blocks to diagnosing bowel cancer, for instance. I found humour was a big part of the lives of those with Crohn’s. It’s a way of dealing with the stresses, and a way of talking with families and others, about what’s going on. You can be blunt with humour in a way that you often can’t be in a serious comment, and I wanted to show that in this story as well.
Caleb is straight up with Drake about his condition, doesn’t pussy foot around, just says it how it is and brings it to the fore rather than feeling too sensitive or embarrassed to raise it. This was something mentioned in conversations I had, as being important for people who had the condition. That it was great if friends, and partners in particular, didn’t shy away from it. It was too big a part of their lives to have to walk on egg shells around it.
Crohn’s disease can affect the sexual expression of all who have it to some degree, especially if they are flaring. But there are some unique issues that gay men with Crohn’s may have to face regarding the particular expression of their sexuality, and that was what I wanted to just touch on in this story.
Having said that, Crohn’s can look very different from person to person. It can potentially manifest from the mouth through the entire gut. Some people find it tends to stick to certain areas in this tract, others have to manage flares throughout their whole alimentary system.
And therefore, the effect of Crohn’s disease on a gay man’s sexuality depends on its severity, where in their body it predominantly affects, what their sexual preference is, and a whole host of other things. I chose to focus on just a couple of the enormous variety of ways the condition can manifest. And I was helped along the way by the amazing honesty of a couple of gay men with Crohn’s who opened their personal lives to me and I thank them dearly.
This story was a privilege to write and I hope I have done it some justice. I hope you enjoy reading it.

Nurse Olivia and Doctor Anderson are a great pair but love is never that easy. Just as they start a relationship, a contagion infects the hospital. Love may not be enough to save them.
I love medical dramas on television. Surprisingly, I haven’t read to many of them. This is a fantastic story! Olivia is such a great character. I loved her personality! She is definitely sassy. Her chemistry with Anderson is thrilling. When the contagion hits, there’s some great suspense. I really enjoyed watching them work together and save lives. This is the first book I’ve read from Ellis Kaye and definitely not the last!
How a Heart Beats is a must read!

This is a second time love story. Haven is divorced and trying to plan out her life when she meets author Ford. Together the sparks fly but can they get over their pasts to save their future?
This is a totally sweet, perfect for my mood kind of story! A car accident brings Ford and Haven together. Their romance is a slow sizzle that really builds up their growing feelings for each other. They have a push and pull of uncertainly with each other that is darling. I really enjoyed reading their struggles and triumphs. I couldn’t stop reading. I needed to find out how their happy ending played out. Let me tell you, that ending is so satisfying and sweet.
If you’re looking for a short romance to sink into, Love by Accident is your perfect choice!

Caitlyn snuck out on Jakob after a wild night together. When he finds her again, he’d determined to keep her but Caitlyn isn’t so easily won. She’s also not sure why a cyborg like Jakob would travel all over the galaxy to find her when they’re don’t normally become attached to their bed mates.
This is book five in the series and I did feel a little lost at the beginning. Caitlyn and Jakob act like they know each other but it’s a very brief description, almost like a synopsis of what happened. Perhaps the events happened in the previous book? I’m not sure but our main characters are having sex just after meeting which didn’t give them much sexual build up and the sex scenes are just too close together. I really liked Caitlyn. She did what she could with what she had in order to survive. Jakob was harder to like. He’s got more of a caveman approach. When Caitlyn leaves him again, in bed with the room bill, it takes another year to find her but find her, he does. Once he finds her the second time, the book really gets great. We get action and some mystery as to who is chasing Caitlyn. The ending has a cliffhanger and I’m interested to see how the story turns out.
I think if the book was longer and had more meat to the story it would have been an amazing scifi romance story. These 52 pages is an interesting looking into Anne Kane’s Cyborg world. I think if you give Running from her Cyborg a read it’ll entice you to read more in the series.

Shadow and Ghost are together but forces threaten to tear them apart. Will their past or another man ruin their happy ending in this dangerous world?
So, that blurb is definitely a turn off. There’s just too much explanation, too much running on. I think a tease is better when reading a blurb just so I can get a hint of the story but not a synopsis of it. That said, the story is pretty good. It is jumpy with the scene breaks. There are also some slow moving scenes. I really liked Shadow and Ghosts chemistry. They feel like a great couple together and I am really routing for their happy ending. Their relationship takes a hit from another man looking to make Shadow his. That makes for a great conflict.
Overall this series shows a lot of promise and I look forward to the next book!

Keeping the Peace: One shifter's love for fun and games brings him to the chance at the ultimate prize...if he remembers that winning isn't everything. For over a century, Lachlan Addair worked for the Shifter Council as an enforcer. When the ruling body decided to open a new investigative branch, Lachlan was the first to volunteer. Infiltrating and exploring a shifter unit without detection is right up his curious cat's alley. When Lachlan's duty to report the causes of strife within a lynx pride has him slipping into Councilman Goldstein's estate |
undetected--just for fun, of course--Lachlan stumbles across Thad--his mate. Unfortunately, the wild turkey shifter is standoffish and brusque. He doesn't trust Lachlan and makes no secret that he thinks the mate-pull is nothing but a trick of the pheromones--something he is determined to ignore. Lachlan loves a good puzzle and is undeterred. He admires Thad's loyalty and uses his extensive wiles to cultivate a little of that for himself. When Lachlan is injured wrapping up a case, will it be the catalyst his mate uses to reject Lachlan--his job could bring danger to his flock, after all--and send him on his way?
Excerpt
Finally spotting the manor between the trees, Lachlan paused. The lawn and bushes were well manicured, and the water from the fountains tinkled in the distance. Taking stock of the shadows created by the flowering trees dotting the area, he wondered if he could make it without being spotted.
Maybe if I shift and keep low to the ground…
“Take one more step toward my flock’s home, and it’ll be the last mistake you ever make.”
Lachlan couldn’t remember the last time someone had snuck up on him. Hiding his shock, he controlled his pulse and kept his composure. How the hell did a guard get the drop on me? Slowly, Lachlan turned…and just about swallowed his tongue.
The hottest guy he’d ever seen was standing less than ten feet behind him…and he was naked.
His mouth watering, Lachlan took in the stranger’s broad shoulders and thickset body. He sported a heavily muscled frame, and his light chest hair trickled down across a delectable set of abdominals to a dark-blond treasure trail. That bit of hair cradled a beautiful piece of man-meat.
Yum!
Lachlan licked his lips before grinning widely at the dark-blond-haired stranger. “How about I take a step toward you then?” He couldn’t help the way his voice took on a husky rumble. Lachlan loved sex, and he hadn’t gotten a chance to fuck or be fucked in months. Giving the guard a hungry leer, he offered, “I don’t recall Councilman Goldstein’s guards going nude, but I gotta say…I like the change.”
Unable to hide his thoughts, Lachlan grinned broadly as he rubbed his palm down his own polo-shirt-covered chest. “Well?” He took that step he’d mentioned. “I really do need to see Councilman Goldstein, but I think I could spare time for a tussle.”
While Lachlan figured it was a bad idea—thinking with his dick—he couldn’t seem to resist. There was something about the glowering, dark-blond male. Something that--
With that one step, the stranger’s scent hit Lachlan’s senses. His instant attraction and his thickening cock made sense. Tipping his head to the side just a little, Lachlan grinned broadly at the man who still hadn’t responded.
He seemed to be too busy eyeing Lachlan warily.
And doesn’t that suck?
“You are my mate, handsome.” Lachlan decided to just throw it out there. Lifting a hand toward him, he took another step. “I’m Lachlan Addair. And who might you be?”
“Not interested,” the broad-shouldered man responded gruffly. He crossed his arms over his chest and frowned at him, pointedly ignoring Lachlan’s hand. “Tell me why you’re sneaking in the back way, and I’ll tell the guards you cooperated.”
Hmm, not a guard then? And what does not interested mean?
Lowering his hand, Lachlan decided to play ball. This was his mate, after all. “I’m an investigator for the Shifter Council,” he told the stranger, hoping for some relaxation to his stance. “I came in the back way to gauge defenses…because it’s fun.” Lachlan shrugged, grinning broadly at his mate. “Consider it an exercise that has turned into an obsession. I love finding holes in defenses, and since my job requires me to infiltrate packs to spy on them, I’m extremely good at it.”
“Fine, and why are you here?”
“I’m here to give a report to Councilman Goldstein in person.” Lachlan suddenly realized how strange it was to find a shifter other than a guard wandering the grounds, especially since the man before him wasn’t a lion shifter. If Lachlan’s nose wasn’t mistaken, his mate was some kind of avian. “What about you, my mate?” Lachlan said, deciding to push. “What are you doing wandering the councilman’s grounds?”
“M’name’s Thad,” the avian shifter responded gruffly. “Use it, ’cause I ain’t yours. And I live here.”
Odd.
Unable to let it go, Lachlan drew another step closer. He saw the tension in Thad’s frame, so kept his hands away from his sides, his palms out in placation. “You are my mate, however, so why are you refusing to acknowledge our connection?” Lachlan couldn’t help but glance down, admiring the way Thad’s thick dick had begun to fill, plumping and extending from his groin. Lifting his gaze to meet Thad’s hazel, narrow-eyed gaze, Lachlan added, “I am yours just as you are mine.”
Thad scoffed, his lip curling in a derisive sneer. “Mating is nothin’ but a trick of the pheromones, and I sure as hell ain’t gonna be run by such fickle instincts.” He pointed in the other direction. “Hands on your head and walk toward the fountain.”
Mentally reeling in shock upon hearing the vehemence in Thad’s tone, Lachlan did as his mate instructed. He lifted his hands, folding his fingers on top of his head, and started toward the nearest fountain.
