Sleeping with a stranger...
Lexie Hayes barely knows her husband any more. With Dean constantly traveling for work, their home life is nonexistent, not to mention their sex life. Filing for divorce, Lexie celebrates with friends while Dean's brother Jonathan watches over her, carrying a torch she didn't know existed. What she also doesn't know is the brothers involvement with the family business, and on a spur of the moment trip to San Antonio with Jonathan, Lexie discovers just how dangerous sleeping with a stranger can be...even when they're family.
This book is a short and entertaining trip through the complexities of family bonds and secret empires. Lexie is believable as the abandoned 'trophy wife' but falls a little too easily into her brother-in-law's arms. I enjoyed the setting, having always wanted to visit the River Walk in San Antonio. Texan native Erica Lynn's knowledge of the area lends an enjoyable authenticity to the story. Lexie's friends Rosie and Lynette provide some additional dimension and comic relief to the tale.
Overall the pace is good, the story clipping straight ahead without too many subplots. When Dean's motives are exposed, the action takes a slightly gruesome turn, which adds some unexpected grit. On the other hand, the book's brief length causes it to skip over opportunities for deeper character development and romantic moments. While smoking hot, the intimate scenes seem to pop out of nowhere without much preamble. At one point, Lexie and Jonathon appear to be having sex in the kitchen while Rosie and Lynette hang out in the backyard. Hey, what are friends for?
Readers who like a quick romantic thriller will enjoy Her Husband's Brother.
