Emma is a witch and she’s been hired to bring a corpse back (make him a zombie) long enough to answer a couple of questions from his brother. After that, the zombie (Peter) is supposed to go right back to sleep (death). Unfortunately, not only does Peter not initially realize he’s a zombie, but he manages to escape the protective spell that Emma put up to contain him. She is forced to turn to Garret, her ex and a death-spell expert (necromancer), to get some help in retaking control of the zombie so she can put him back to rest.
This was a quick read and really easy on the senses. Emma is a spunky character who unfortunately got pulled into the zombie-raising by a man up to no good. Garret was willing to do what was necessary and didn’t hold any grudges for the relationship having previously failed. When Emma called for help, he leaped to it. There was a nice interplay and potential sequel bait in the love/not-love relationship between Garret and his brother. I’d love to know what the brother did to have to avoid police attention, given he seems to be a white witch/healer type.
This book didn’t push any boundaries, and in the case of Peter and his widow, it was a lovely testament to eternal love and how powerful wedding vows can be in a world where magic exists. I would happily read other books by Ms. Rosewarne and am very grateful to her for sending this one to review.
