Micah Lewis is a rare prehistoric cat shifter who is the slave of the Fae lord. He is only allowed out of his cage to go to work each day at a bakery owned by the Fae. On the bus one day he meets Daniel Hawthorne, a wolf shifter who had been riding the same bus not out of coincidence but because he recognized his mate. Chaos ensues when Micah agrees to meet Daniel after work and the Fae send their shifter guardians after the couple. Determined not to lose Micah, Daniel will appeal to his alpha brother and the entire pack to keep Micah safe, rescue the other slaves including Micah’s twin brother, and reorganize the corrupt government. Oh, and all this while dealing with Micah’s greater than usual heat. Love prevails however and Micah proves to be a worthy partner for the wolf shifter.
I admit in the beginning that the storyline was not one I typically read. The writing of it however was done in such a way that even for a shorter novel the world building was good. I didn’t find any unanswered questions in the telling of the story. All the characters were either extremely likeable or completely detestable. While there were many hot sex scenes they were not gratuitous and were done in a way that you felt the bond growing between the two mates even when the heat was pushing them to act. I gave the book four stars for being a wonderful jaunt into a different world. It was not the traditional shifter take on mates (even in a m/m story) and I found that refreshing. I believe this story allows for other books in this world and look forward to reading them if so!
