Alex goes to sea in the effort to save his family from ruin as the only male heir with a title. While at sea, they're attacked by pirates. He manages to bargain a small part of the shipment and himself in exchange for letting his crew go free as well as the remainder of cargo. Initially he is treated with disdain due to his title but the Captain of the ship, a liberated slave, sees in him as more. They must overcome their own demons as well as the battles surrounding them in order to find love and freedom from unjust societal constraints.
I honestly was not sure what to expect as I don’t typically read steampunk and have only read a few M/M titles. I absolutely love this book! The world building and the plot are first class, the characters are easy to love and the humor is weaved into the story so well it made me laugh out loud frequently. An A+ effort in Ms. Gala’s first steampunk attempt and I will absolutely read her stories in the future. The sexual tension is thick and the actual love scenes are well worth the wait. Five stars for this awesome combination of plot, characters, world building, and hot M/M romance!
Set slightly in the future, Ollie is an honest gay detective working with homophobic co-workers. But are they corrupt? His captain asks him to go undercover to find out. But undercover means going into a shade club, a type of BDSM club where there is no safe word...
This book had it all. It was dark, tense, suspenseful, and edgy. There’s drama and hot brutal sex. After his kidnapping, I loved how the author kept us in the flow of Ollie’s thoughts as he tried to use his police training to stay sane. I love the conflict in Ollie’s mind, is he a regular club kind of guy or is he a shade club kind of guy? The training he goes through at the kidnapper’s house lets him figure this out. Also the angst and recrimination that Travis puts himself through at a pivotal point in the story was well written out. This book isn’t a sweet romance, yet there is romance there. The BDSM in this story is more hardcore than I usually enjoy, but the story was so well written that I was pulled in.
If dark BDSM is your thing, you must read Without A Net by Lyn Gala!
