Emery keeps meeting a man with wings and dying in weird ways. But he won’t stay dead, which for the junior reaper is a problem. The reaper’s boss, Administrator Dagmar, tells him the discrepancy must be resolved. What a premise! Throw in a few demons, the end of the world, a magical younger sister and the story becomes a three-sixty roller coaster ride.
This story as a comedy is hilarious, I couldn’t stop laughing. It’s a unique and refreshing paranormal quickie. Carole’s writing reminds me of the great Terry Pratchett or Douglas Adams … which in my book is amazing praise. Don’t expect the story to make any sense. It just flows from one ridiculous scene to the next. This is at best a YA romance. The sexual tension between Emery and the reaper, John / Sam, is obvious from the beginning but the dialogue remains at a flirty level. The scenes flip from Emery perspective to John / Sam's perspective. For me, it didn’t matter that there weren’t any sexual scenes, nothing explicit beyond a hand on a knee at the end of the story! The beginning's surreal with Emery waking up in a morgue and doesn’t disappoint all the way through to the last word.
The words will carry you on a silly and unbelievable ride. You have to read Don't Fear the Reaper!
