This book takes us back to Ms. Masters’ popular Crossroads series. This time, the heroine is Sable, a cheetah who’s forced to look outside her pack because she was once almost mated to another cheetah and since then, she’s been considered his mate, and thus off-limits for anyone else to mate with. When she travels to Crossroads, she barely makes it through as someone (or something) has snapped the tether that binds Crossroads to Earth and wherever else it hovers near. Warren, a tiger also in search of a mate, meets her and is there to help her when her shifting starts going wonky.
Romance blossoms quickly, as tends to happen in the Crossroads books, but that’s part of what I enjoy about this series. There was a lot going on in the book besides the romance here – the severing of the tether for the Crossroads, the elves wanting in on the Crossroads action, shifting ability going awry, and that’s just to start.
I got a good feeling for all of the characters and definitely enjoyed the romp as they sorted out what was going wrong. Sable gets some nifty abilities when the Crossroads gets put back in its proper place, and I liked that nobody’s family was really against the match, despite the whole tiger/cheetah thing.
On a personal note, I was stunned to discover that Zenina Masters and Viola Grace are the same person. I’ve reviewed/read a couple of Viola’s works…and they didn’t click for me. Its instances like this where I totally get (and support) authors with multiple pen names. I probably never would have tried the Crossroads series if it had been published under Viola’s name. But now…I’m hooked!
